Dry eye syndrome is one of the most common conditions I treat, and also one of the most misunderstood. Patients arrive with beliefs collected from friends, pharmacies, and the internet, and some of those beliefs actively delay proper treatment. Let’s separate the myths from the facts.
Myth 1: “Lubricating eye drops are addictive”
Fact: Lubricating drops (artificial tears) are not addictive. Your eyes do not become dependent on them or lazy because of them. What actually happens is simpler: dryness is chronic, so when you stop using drops, the underlying dryness is still there and symptoms return. That is not addiction; that is an untreated condition. Note that this applies to lubricating drops; decongestant “redness relief” drops are a different product and should not be used long term without medical advice.
Myth 2: “Dry eye is just part of aging, nothing can be done”
Fact: Age and hormones raise the risk, but dry eye is a treatable medical condition, not a life sentence. From preservative-free tears to lid therapy, anti-inflammatory treatment, and in-clinic procedures for blocked oil glands, there is a ladder of effective options. Most women feel significantly better with the right plan.
Myth 3: “Screens are the only cause”
Fact: Screens contribute because we blink up to 60 percent less while staring at them, but they are rarely the whole story. Hormonal changes after 40, air conditioning, certain medications, and eyelid gland dysfunction are often the real drivers. That is why dryness that persists after reducing screen time still deserves an examination. We explain the hormonal side fully in our article on dry eyes and menopause.
Myth 4: “Crying fixes dry eyes”
Fact: Emotional tears are chemically different from the lubricating tear film your eyes need. They are mostly water, they lack the oily layer, and they actually wash away some of the protective film. If your eyes water a lot yet still feel dry and irritated, that is a classic sign of dry eye syndrome, not proof that your eyes are well hydrated.
Myth 5: “If it was serious, it would hurt more”
Fact: Dry eye severity and symptoms do not always match. Some patients with significant surface damage feel only mild discomfort, while others with mild dryness feel miserable. Only an examination can tell you where you truly stand.
The Takeaway
Dry eye is common, real, and treatable. Do not let a myth keep you uncomfortable for years. If your eyes burn, feel gritty, or blur through the day, book a dry eye assessment with Dr. Nermeen Amer, DHA-licensed specialist ophthalmologist in Dubai, and get answers based on your eyes, not on internet folklore.
